IBDP Mathematics Tutor in Al Barari, Dubai: Academic Performance Insights
Al Barari is one of a kind in Dubai. Sculpted from desert land on the Dubai land road, this unique floral refuge - whose name translates from the Arabic as "wilderness" - was created in the mid-2000s as one of Dubai's most ambitious luxury real estate developments. While most Dubai developments have pushed the limits of built-up space, Al Barari has done the opposite: devoting more than sixty percent of its land to the rich landscaping, water bodies and themed gardens that have earned it the reputation of being one of the most beautiful places in the Gulf. The global-minded, accomplished families who have made Al Barari home bring with them the level of academic rigor that the IB Diploma Program (IBDP) so easily embraces. For IBDP Mathematics students here, IB Scholars powered by Amourion offers the expert tutoring that this demanding subject deserves. Dr. Anil Khare addresses the questions Al Barari parents ask us most often.
My child is conflicted between AA HL and AA SL. How do you counsel families in this regard?
Dr Anil Khare: This is a decision that needs to be given more consideration than is standard at the time of subject choice, because it has implications beyond the IB. Analysis and Approaches HL is a stated or de facto requirement for Engineering, Computer Science, Physics and Economics at most selective universities around the world. If a student selects AA SL because they think it is "safe" and then decides in Year 12 that they want to study Engineering at a Russell Group university, there is no easy answer. We make a diagnosis before we recommend a course level - the student's level of algebraic comfort, ability to think abstractly and university aspirations. The course level is not what is most comfortable in September of Year 12. It is what keeps all the university options open and is possible with the right support.
Paper 3 in AA HL is very different to the other papers. How do you prepare students for this paper?
Dr. Anil Khare: Paper 3 is designed specifically to be different to the rest of the IB Mathematics examination. It is a series of longer, multi-part problems based on mathematical scenarios they have never seen before, and is designed to test their ability to think mathematically on their feet rather than memorize and reproduce patterns. Those who have studied for IB Mathematics by practicing past papers are often genuinely shocked by Paper 3 because the paper is designed to be resistant to such an approach. To prepare for Paper 3 we give students the mathematical skills that the paper tests, namely the ability to structure the problem, recognize which areas of mathematics are relevant and then to build a solution step-by-step. This skill can be learned, but it takes deliberate practice and training that is different from the usual "exam practice".
My son's predicted grade is a 5 but he needs a 7 for university. Can they make up that difference?
Dr. Anil Khare: Moving two grade boundaries in IB Mathematics is a big gap but a manageable one with the right type of preparation - we have successfully closed exactly this gap in many students. The leap from a 5 to a 7 rarely involves learning new material. It does require a precise identification of the particular types of questions and topics where points are being lost, an understanding of the nature of the mistakes being made in each case and the development of the examination skills and self-reliant problem-solving skills to ensure that marks are consistently earned in those areas under examination conditions. We identify this in the initial session and craft a plan to address it. It is common to see two grade boundaries of improvement over a short period of preparation.
The IBDP Mathematics Score That Changes What Is Possible
High-level IB Mathematics is one of the strongest signals that can be sent to a university - and one of the hardest to send without expert guidance. For the students of Al Barari and the Dubai land area who are ready to achieve the score their future demands, IB Scholars powered by Amourion is a great place to start.
