IBDP HL vs SL Subjects: What Is the Difference and How Should Students Choose?
The International Baccalaureate Diploma Programme (IBDP) has become one of the world's most respected pre-university qualifications. The programme was introduced in 1968 in Geneva, Switzerland, with the aim of creating an internationally recognised education that encouraged academic breadth, critical thinking and global-mindedness. Today, thousands of students around the world take the IBDP, but one question often causes confusion: Should I take a subject at Higher Level (HL) or Standard Level (SL)?
What is the difference between HL and SL?
The simplest way to understand it is depth and workload. HL subjects are studied in greater depth and generally involve more teaching hours and more demanding content. SL subjects cover the essential concepts of the discipline but with a smaller scope.
The IBDP course typically involves students studying three subjects at HL and three subjects at SL. This enables students to build a strong foundation of knowledge in a range of subjects, alongside specialisation in areas which can be relevant to their university aspirations.
Does HL mean the subject is much harder?
Not necessarily—but it is usually more demanding.
An HL subject typically requires students to learn additional material, develop greater analytical skills and dedicate more time to assignments, revision and examinations. For example, an HL Mathematics student may encounter more advanced concepts than an SL student.
But trouble is also subjective. What may seem difficult for one student can be easy for another. So, it's possible to make a wrong choice by only selecting HL because of its sounding name.
Why should students choose certain subjects at HL?
University requirements are one of the biggest reasons.
Students targeting competitive degrees such as Medicine, Engineering, Economics, Computer Science or Natural Sciences may need particular subjects at HL. For example, some universities require or strongly prefer Chemistry and Biology at HL for Medicine, while Engineering programmes may place significant importance on HL Mathematics and Physics.
Students should therefore research university requirements before finalising their IB subject levels, rather than waiting until the application stage.
Should I always take my strongest subjects at HL?
Usually, your strengths should play an important role—but they should not be the only consideration.
A good HL subject is one where you have a combination of ability, genuine interest and a clear academic purpose. If you are excellent at Mathematics but dislike the subject, taking it at HL could create unnecessary pressure. Conversely, choosing an easier HL simply to maximise grades could limit your university options.
The ideal combination is one that challenges you without becoming unmanageable.
How can I decide between HL and SL?
Start by asking three questions: What do I enjoy? What am I good at? What will my future university course require?
Then consider workload. The IBDP already has six subjects, the Extended Essay, Theory of Knowledge (TOK) and Creativity, Activity, Service (CAS). So, your subject options should form a programme of work that is manageable.
Can students change their HL and SL choices?
In some circumstances, schools may allow students to change levels, particularly early in the programme. However, this depends on the school's policies, timetable and available subject groups. It is far better to make an informed choice from the beginning.
