IBDP Environmental Systems and Societies HL Tutors in Dubai

IBDP Environmental Systems and Societies HL Tutors in Dubai: Question and Answer with Dr. Anil Khare

Environmental Systems and Society (ESS) is a truly unique subject in the IB Diploma Program. It is the sole subject taught simultaneously in two of the subject groups (Group 3, Individuals and Societies, and Group 4, Sciences), enabling students to meet both a humanities and science requirement with just one subject. At Higher Level, ESS is also one of the most intellectually rich and challenging subjects of the Diploma Program, drawing together concepts from ecology, environmental ethics, politics and quantitative science to create a course that demands and rewards breadth of understanding as much as depth of content. For ambitious Dubai students, ESS HL is a huge opportunity to build the interdisciplinary skills that the world's top universities prize. IB Scholars powered by Amourion offers the expert ESS HL tuition that capitalizes on it. Dr Anil Khare addresses Dubai parents' most common questions.

My son & daughter both opted for ESS HL because they thought it would be easier than Bio/Chem HL. Are they right?

Dr. Anil Khare: It is a common misunderstanding we hear often and it should be cleared up now. ESS HL is in fact very difficult in its own right, not less difficult than the other science subjects. While Biology and Chemistry HL examine content-specific knowledge about particular scientific disciplines, ESS HL examines an integrated, evaluative and more difficult to learn element: the integration of the ecological, social, political and ethical aspects of environmental issues into cohesive arguments. Paper 1 tests the application of systems thinking to unseen case studies. Paper 2 requires long-answer essays that integrate multiple topics. The Internal Assessment requires independent fieldwork, data collection and analysis. ESS HL is a consistently poor choice for students who believe it's the easy science course. Students who see it as the intellectually unique course that it is and study accordingly find it one of the most satisfying courses of the Diploma Program.

My son finds the systems thinking approach that ESS takes throughout the course difficult. How do you teach it?

Dr. Anil Khare: Systems thinking is the key conceptual framework of the ESS course, and the skill that most clearly distinguishes between students who understand ESS and those who simply know it. It asks students to view environmental events not as discrete phenomena but as emergent properties of complex interlinked systems - that is, feedback, equilibrium, resilience, tipping points and human impacts on ecosystems at local, regional and global scales. We provide students with an introduction to systems thinking as an analytical skill from the very first week of the course, using it to understand real environmental problems such as deforestation, ocean acidification & urban heat islands so that they are used to thinking of environmental problems in terms of systems. Once this approach becomes second nature, students discover that it supplies them with a consistent approach to answering most examination questions in the course.

What guidance do you give for the ESS Internal Assessment (IA) fieldwork?

Dr. Anil Khare: The ESS IA is one of the most unique Internal Assessments of the IB Diploma since it involves designing and implementing an environmental fieldwork investigation, collecting primary data from natural ecosystems and analyzing it using statistical and scientific approaches. The most common problem that we see is an investigation question that is either too large to conduct in a local environment or too small to yield data of sufficient complexity to analyze. We work with students step-by-step to develop a fieldwork question that is both ecologically significant and feasible, to create a robust sampling strategy, to gather data, to apply suitable statistical analyses and to write up the investigation according to the IB's assessment criteria explicitly. This process helps students to consistently produce IAs that are scored in the upper levels and contribute significantly to their ESS grade.
