Where do you begin?
Dr Anil Khare: Design Technology at Higher Level is one of the most unique subjects in the IB curricula, which combines creative thinking, engineering principles, human centred design and high-level academic analysis in a manner that no other Diploma subject does. The most frequent issue that students experience is that they are attempting to manage the project cycle, the theory papers and the Internal Assessment at the same time without any structure linking the three. How do you approach the Internal Assessment design project in IBDP Design Technology in particular?
Dr Anil Khare: The IA in Design Technology is evaluated against a demanding range of criteria related to the design brief, research, specification, design development, testing and evaluation. We see a consistent lack in students' designs, which are visually appealing, but their written analysis, evaluation of tests, and link between client needs and final solution does not adequately demonstrate the depth of thinking that actually took place in the design. The marks are not awarded for the quality of the product, but for the documentation of the reasoning. My child's school has limited workshop and prototyping access. Does this affect their IA performance?
Dr Anil Khare: The IA assessment criteria are not evaluating the level of the physical prototype, they are assessing the quality of the design thinking, research rigour and evaluative depth. A thoughtful, sound design process, supported by sound, logical analysis, always beats a beautifully executed prototype, accompanied by shallow rationalization. We help students choose their topic for IA that is truly 'investigable' with the resources at their disposal, and present their evidence of the design process in such a way that the examiner is clearly seeing the type of thinking they are specifically looking for.
