IBDP Design Technology Tutor in Oud Metha, Dubai: Specialist Support That Delivers Results

As one of Dubai's most enduring neighbourhoods, in a way that is hidden in the shadows of the city's dramatic transformation, Oud Metha has maintained a unique and relaxed character over decades of rapid urban growth around it. Oud Metha developed organically since the 1970s, as a mixed residential and commercial neighbourhood for the first generation of professional expatriates in Dubai. The landmarks include the Lamcy Plaza shopping centre, the Rashid Hospital corridor, the American Hospital and the Irish Village which have become truly part of Dubai's social fabric, something that is not often found in newer master planned communities. Today, Oud Metha and its neighbouring areas such as Umm Hurair, Al Jaddaf, Dubai Healthcare City and Bur Dubai are home to a well-educated mature population of families with children regularly attending some of Dubai's most established international schools, and which are academically serious in every sense. For IBDP Design Technology students across this community, Amourion and Dr Anil Khare provide the specialist tuition that this intellectually distinctive subject demands.

My child is struggling to connect the theoretical content of Design Technology with their practical project work. What is the issue?

Dr Anil Khare: This is the most consistent problem that is observed in IBDP Design Technology and has a definite structural cause. The subject demands students to work with two distinctly different thinking processes which are the analytical systems approach of the theory papers, the human-centered design thinking approach of the Internal Assessment project and the ability to switch back and forth between them. When students only think of them as two separate issues, they typically perform poorly on both. The theory informs the design decisions and theories should be implemented in the design decision. Dr Anil Khare creates this integration from the ground up at Amourion and every design decisions made is linked to a theoretical principle, every theoretical idea encountered in the content is also linked to an actual design application. That connection is what high-scoring Design Technology work actually looks like.

What makes the IBDP Design Technology Internal Assessment so difficult to score well in?

Dr Anil Khare: All the criteria used to evaluate the IA are related to systematic design thinking, thorough research with clients, evidence-based decision making and honest, analytical evaluation — not the visual quality of the final product. The most frequent way that capable students lose marks is that their written documentation is descriptive, not analytical. It is not simply about describing what has been designed, but also about justifying why decisions were made about the design, what alternatives were considered and how test results led to further iterations and what the final test evaluation tells about the difference between the design specification and the realised solution. We teach students to document their design process analytically from the beginning creating the criterion-by-criterion documentation that IB examiners are seeking, not the impressive portfolio that gets them only a moderate mark.

How far in advance should a Design Technology student begin working on their IA?

Dr Anil Khare: Earlier than almost any other IB component. The Design Technology IA is an iterative process and it is not possible to complete it in a short period of time before the deadline to the detriment of its quality. Proper research, design development, prototyping, testing and the final evaluative write up take time. Students who start from Amourion's IA support at the beginning of Year 12 can go through the entire development cycle and each stage will help to guide the next stage as the assessment criteria are intended to reward. If students are starting in Year 13, they are working in a compressed timetable that often results in rushed evaluation and superficial testing documentation and these are two areas in which the most marks are lost.
