My child chose IB Chemistry HL but is seriously considering dropping to SL. How do you decide?

Dr Anil Khare: This is a decision we are asked to advise on frequently & it should never be made in the heat of a challenging half-term. The first question is always: what is the student planning to study at university? be it medicine, dentistry, chemical engineering & biochemistry at most competitive institutions require chemistry HL as a minimum entry condition dropping to SL close those opportunities permanently before the student has finished Year 12. The second consideration is whether the difficulty reflects a genuine mismatch with the course or a gap in preparation that can be addressed. In our experience, most students who feel overwhelmed by HL chemistry in the first term of Year 12 are struggling with specific topics such as bonding, energetics or early organic, rather than with the course as a whole. We conduct a diagnostic test to pinpoint exactly where the difficulty lies before recommending any course change. Decisions made on evidence are always more effective than those made out of anxiety.

The IB Chemistry Internal Assessment counts for 20% of the final grade. How do you support students with it?

Dr Anil Khare: The IA is both one of the most valuable & one of the most frequently under-prepared elements of the IB Chemistry course. It contributes for 20% of the final grade & is assessed against five criteria which are personal engagement, exploration, analysis, evaluation & communication. Students who treat it like a standard school lab report almost always underperform, because the IA is specifically designed to reward scientific thinking as well as the quality of the research question, the rigor of the experimental design, the depth of the data analysis & the honesty of the evaluation. We guide students through every stage by selecting a research question that is genuinely investigable & appropriately scoped, designing the methodology, processing data with correct propagation of uncertainties & structuring the write-up to address each criterion explicitly. An IA that is properly supported is one of the most dependable sources of marks available to any IB Chemistry student.

My child is strong in Biology but struggles specifically with the quantitative aspects of IB Chemistry. What is the issue?

Dr Anil Khare: IB Chemistry places a greater quantitative demand on students than IB Biology & this gap often catches those students with strong conceptual understanding but less developed mathematical fluency. The areas that consistently present difficulty include stoichiometric calculations, equilibrium constant expressions & their manipulation, pH & acid-base calculations & the mathematical treatment of reaction kinetics. These topics are not conceptually challenging in the same way as organic mechanisms but they are procedurally demanding & require disciplined, step-by-step working under timed conditions, a skill developed through practice rather than reading. We address the quantitative components directly, building calculation fluency through structured worked examples & independent problem solving until students can carry out each calculation type reliably from a blank page without relying on a model.

My child's school has just switched to the new IB Chemistry syllabus. Are the resources and past papers sufficient for preparation?

Dr Anil Khare: The current IB chemistry syllabus, which introduced the structure & reactivity framework for the first exam in 2025, has presented a challenge for both students & schools. The theoretical structure of the subject differs significantly from the previous syllabus & the volume of past paper material available under the new requirement is necessarily limited. Our tutors have worked extensively with the updated syllabus since its introduction & we understand how the four themes interconnect, where the AHL extensions introduce additional complexity & how the new Paper 1 data-based question format differs from what earlier cohorts encountered. We complement the limited past paper resources with our own bank of practice questions & mark schemes aligned to the new specification & we prepare students specifically for the question styles & assessment expectations of the revised examinations.
