IB Past Paper Analysis for All Subjects: Expert Insights from Dr. Anil Khare
There is a type of IB revision that seems hard but actually isn't such as reading and re-reading notes, underlining textbooks and watching videos of solutions but never attempting a past paper alone before examination day and there is a version of IB revision that delivers a higher grade: systematic past paper analysis that sees each question answered and each mark lost as a lesson in what needs to be improved. At IB Scholars powered by Amourion, past paper analysis is not something you do when all else fails. It is the key framework for all examination revision - for every subject, paper and grade. Dr. Anil Khare responds to the questions we receive from students and parents about doing past papers "right".
My child practices past papers but it doesn't help. What are they doing wrong?
Dr. Anil Khare: Sitting a past paper and analyzing a past paper are two different acts and most students only do the former. Attempting a past paper, with a timer, gives you a mark. Mark-scheme analysis of that paper, question by question, looking at exactly why that mark has been lost, which command word was misinterpreted, which principle of physics was misapplied and which response structure is not in line with what the examiners are looking for that leads to improvement. If a student attempts ten past papers without proper mark-scheme analysis, they will make the same mistakes on paper ten as they did on paper one, because the mistakes have never been addressed and root-caused. We run all past paper sessions as two phases: attempt and mark-scheme analysis with specific feedback for every mark lost. The results are not slow to follow often two or three sessions later.
Is past paper analysis different in different IB subjects?
Dr. Anil Khare: Yes, and it's important to understand how. In IB Mathematics, past paper analysis shows calculation mistakes, inappropriate choice of method or insufficient algebraic skill that can be improved by practicing the type of questions that each set contains. Certain mechanical & practical terms are sometimes excluded by students undertaking IB Chemistry & Biology although they are necessary as per IB marking scheme expectations. In IB Economics, it shows the difference between analytical & descriptive answers between stating what the diagram shows as opposed to explaining the economic process it portrays. In IB History and English, analysis highlights structural and argumentative flaws in extended essay responses that can't be fixed with more content knowledge. Different subjects require different diagnostic apparatuses, and our subject experts bring the appropriate one to each paper they analyze with students.
When should students start past paper analysis?
Dr. Anil Khare: Much sooner than most. Past paper analysis is largely used as a final revision technique, something that students do in the final four to six weeks prior to exams. This is far too late for it to fulfill its prime purpose. The best use of past paper analysis is not to reinforce what a student already knows but it is to identify what he or she does not know, and do something about it in a timely fashion. A student who starts structured past paper analysis six months prior to their exams identifies content, technique and mark scheme mismatches and is able to address them in a methodical way. A student who begins six weeks before their examinations discover the same problems but with only a few weeks to correct them before the papers are sat. We embed past paper analysis into our session work from the start of the academic year - not just as a means to practice revision, but as a means to inform all sessions to follow.
