IB DP Maths Tutor in Barsha Heights: Specialist Support & Guide
Offering support to IB Diploma students across Barsha Heights, Al Barsha 1, 2 & 3, Al Quoz, Jumeirah Village, Media City & the broader New Dubai corridor
Al Barsha was not on Dubai maps until before the early 2000s. The area joined as a deliberate complement to the rapid commercialization of Sheikh Zayed road which was a planned residential & mixed-use district designed to absorb Dubai’s increasing professional population. Barsha Heights, which was previously known as TECOM, became its most internationally flavored quarter which includes a group of media companies, technology firms & residential towers that attracted educated & career-focused families from across the world. Today, these students are enrolled in the IB Diploma which is one of the most academically challenging pre-university qualifications.
IB DP Mathematics, be it Analysis & Approaches or Applications & Interpretation, is constantly the subject those students find challenging to navigate alone. At IB Scholars powered by Amourion, we have spent over twenty years assisting them through it.
Why IB DP Maths is a different kind of challenge
Most students who face challenges with IB DP Maths are not struggling because they lack ability but they are struggling because the IB assesses mathematics in a way which is different from IGCSE or other syllabuses. For example, Paper 3 in HL Analysis & Approaches, has extended problems that no student has seen before which are made to be unfamiliar. The examiner will be evaluating mathematical reasoning & not pattern recognition.
There is also an Internal Assessment, which needs students to independently design & execute a piece of mathematical exploration & it becomes clear why IB DP Maths requires a different kind of preparation. Content on its own does not suffice. Students are required to think mathematically & this skill has to be intentionally developed.

Internal Assessment (IA) Support — All Courses
We assist students through every stage of their Mathematical Journey which are: topic selection, mathematical rigor, personal engagement & presentation. These are the four pillars of a high-scoring IA.
How we deliver sessions at IB Scholars powered by Amourion
- One-on-one private tutoring — entirely personalized to the student’s syllabus, paper & problem areas
- Small group lessons — these are made for students at the same course level who benefit from collective problem-solving
- IA-focused sessions — devoted support for the Mathematical Investigation from first draft to final submission
- Pre-examination intensive programs — structured, intensive revision in the final weeks
- Online sessions — live, interactive & the same as in-person tuition
How IB Scholars powered by Amourion keep parents informed
Parents stay up to date through:
- Session-by-session progress reports covering what was done & areas that need revision.
- Topic performance tracking updated throughout the academic year
- IA milestone updates so families know exactly their child’s status in the IA process

Questions parents in Barsha Heights ask us
My child has chosen AA HL but is now finding it unmanageable. Is switching courses the only option?
Not Always. AA HL is purely challenging, but the decision to change should not be made considering one challenging topic or from a bad mock result. We work with students to pinpoint whether the challenge is a specific content gap, a lack of proper methods or an issue of time management, of which this can all be addressed. If, after careful evaluation, the course level is is truly not the right fit, we will say so clearly. But in our experience, most AA HL students who feel overwhelmed have not had access to the right kind of support.
How do you approach the Internal Assessment? Most tutors seem to avoid it.
We do not avoid IAs but offer specific sessions to it. The IA carries a weight of twenty percent of the final grade & it is completely within a student’s control, which makes it one of the areas that a student has to get right. We assist students in choosing a topic that is genuinely mathematically rich, structure their IA to meet the IB’s five criteria demands & develop the personal engagement that differentiates a Level 6 or 7 IA from a Level 4.
My child is an AI SL student but still struggling. Is AI SL genuinely being underestimated?
Yes, frequently. AI SL is sometimes chosen by students who believe that it is the easier option & they approach it not fully prepared. The statistical part as well as hypothesis testing, probability distributions, regression modelling is conceptually demanding even though it is less algebraically challenging than AA.
The IB awards both predicted grades and final grades. Can tutoring influence both?
Yes. Predicted scores are issued by the school based on in-class performance & the mock exam results, both of which can be improved through tutoring. Strong predicted scores are necessary for conditional university offers, especially in the UK. The Final exam performance then determines if those offers are met.
My child struggles specifically with Paper 1 — the no-calculator paper. How do you train for that?
Paper 1 tests mental fluency as much as conceptual understanding. Students who depend heavily on their GDC for routine calculations often feel lost when it is taken away. IB Scholars powered by Amourion therefore train Paper 1 skills separately: focusing on mental arithmetic, algebraic manipulation without shortcuts & the capacity to estimate & check answers quickly. These are specific skill sets that improve reliably through focused practice.
We are based in Barsha Heights but my child’s exam is in six weeks. Is there enough time?
Six weeks of focused, structured preparation can make a substantial difference to student’s IB Maths grade as we have witnessed it many times. The key lies in prioritization: Identifying the topics that carry the most marks, which paper the student does not perform well & using the available lessons strategically. We build this plan in the first session & implement it week by week until the exam.
Do you help with Maths Extended Essays or other IB components that overlap with Maths?
IB Scholars powered by Amourion support the Mathematical Exploration IA as a key part of our service. For students writing a Mathematics Extended Essay, we provide guidance on topic selection, mathematical depth & the specific requirements of the EE assessment criteria. When Physics or Economics EEs involve substantial quantitative analysis, we can also support these aspects.
