IB DP English Tutor Online: Expert Diploma Support Wherever You Are
IB DP English A is one of the most heavily assessed yet least explicitly prepared-for subjects in the entire diploma program. Whether a student is studying Language & Literature or Literature, at Standard or Higher Level, at an IB World School in Dubai, across the GCC, in Australia or elsewhere, the core challenge remains the same, a course that rewards a form of literary & linguistic analysis that is precise, structured & grounded in the IB's own assessment criteria rather than general engagement with texts that most students develop before the diploma.
At IB Scholars powered by Amourion Group, we have provided specialist IB English A tuition for over two decades. All sessions are live, interactive & fully online via shared digital annotation tools that replicate the standard of in-person teaching. Students in Dubai, across the GCC, in Australia and in every other time zone we support receive the same specialist expertise in every session, with no commute, no geographical limitations & no compromise on quality.
Why IB DP English A demands more than classroom teaching alone
Dr Anil Khare: IB English A is not a subject in which a passion alone earns marks. It rewards a highly specific analytical discipline & the ability to identify how language, structure & form create meaning in a text, articulate that observation using precise literary or linguistic terminology & construct a sustained, coherent argument that connects textual evidence to a coherent interpretive claim. Most students enter the IB having been rewarded for engaging responses & personal reactions to texts. The IB examiners however rewards something qualitatively different: rigorous close reading, controlled argument & confident use of subject-specific vocabulary aligned directly with the assessment objectives.

Questions IB English A parents ask us
My child reads widely and loves literature. Why are their Paper 1 scores still disappointing?
Dr Anil Khare: Because IB Paper 1 does not assess a love of literature but it evaluates the ability to analyze an unseen text with precision under a strict time limit, using the specific critical vocabulary & argumentative structure required by the IB's marking scheme. A student who reads widely & responds to texts intuitively may produce an insightful & engaged response, but it will typically remain in the middle bands rather than reaching the highest levels. The gap is usually structural & the response focuses on what the text is about rather than how specific language choices, structural devices & stylistic devices shape meaning & influence the reader. We train students to approach unseen texts analytically from the first word of the passage, annotating for technique before writing & structuring each paragraph around a clear technical claim, supported by precise evidence & followed by explicit analysis of effect. That shift from engaged to analytical reading is the single most valuable improvement we produce in IB English A students.
The Individual Oral feels unlike any other IB assessment. How do you prepare a student for it?
Dr Anil Khare: By approaching it as a performance that requires rehearsal rather than conversation that can be improvised. The Individual Oral is a ten-minute structured commentary on an extract from one literary & one non-literary work, linked through a global issue of the student's choice. The IB assesses it against four criteria which is knowledge & understanding of the works, analysis of the extract, connection to the global issue & language. Students who do not practice the format under timed conditions usually find that they either run out of time or exhaust their material too quickly & neither of which happens to students who have practiced with feedback multiple times. We begin IO preparation as soon as the student has selected their global issue: choosing extracts, argument structuring, practicing timing & verbal delivery with detailed criterion-by-criterion feedback after each rehearsal. By examination day, the format will be completely familiar.
Should my child take English A Literature or Language & Literature? Does the choice matter for university?
Dr Anil Khare: The choice is more significant than most parents initially realize & it should be guided on the basis of the student's strengths & intended university pathway rather than on which looks more accessible. Literature focuses solely on literary texts & rewards close reading, literary analysis & critical interpretation. Language & Literature by contrast combines non-literary & literary texts & it rewards the ability to analyze language use across a wider range of contexts & purposes. For students intending to pursue English at university, Comparative Literature or Humanities, Literature is often the more suitable option & may be required or preferred by admissions. For students applying to Journalism, Communications, Law or Social Sciences, Language & Literature's broader analytical scope can be more advantageous. We provide clear, honest guidance at the beginning, taking into account both the student's strengths & their long-term academic goals.
My child's HL Essay is due soon and they have barely started. Can tuition genuinely help at this stage?
Dr Anil Khare: Yes, but the approach must be focused rather than exhaustive. The HL Essay is a 1,200-1,500-word independent literary analysis based on a text of the student's choice, marked against three criteria: knowledge & understanding, analysis & evaluation, focus & organization. A student who has not yet begun but has a clear sense of their chosen text can still produce a strong HL Essay in a limited timeframe if the sessions are focused. We work efficiently: formulating a precise, arguable research question, shaping the essay structure around a coherent central argument, selecting & closely analyzing the most productive textual evidence & drafting in stages with criteria-based feedback at each stage. The HL Essay is a controlled assignment unlike examination papers; the student writes it without time pressure & with full access to the texts. With the right guidance, HL Essay is one of the most dependable sources of obtaining marks in the whole IB English A course.
