Abu Dhabi Private tutor of American Curriculum tutoring (AP and SAT): A Student & Family Guide
With the American curriculum, a strong and increasing presence in the educational environment of Abu Dhabi has been established. The Advanced Placement program, and the SAT, have become the qualification of choice across the international school community of the capital, and even increasingly within its tutoring community. IB Scholars powered by Amourion has served American curriculum tutoring students in Abu Dhabi for over two decades. The most common answers to the questions that families present to us are those that Dr. Anil Khare provides.
We are tutoring our child using the American curriculum and targeting US university admissions. How do AP subjects and the SAT work together as a qualification strategy?
Dr. Anil Khare: AP program and SAT have different yet complementary roles in a US university application, and the relationship between them is crucial to developing a coherent qualification strategy. The SAT is a standardized exam of mathematical reasoning, evidence-based reading & writing, made to offer a constant & comparable measure of academic reasoning in all applicants irrespective of their educational background or syllabus. By contrast, AP exams indicate the subject-specific mastery of a student at a level that an admissions office would consider truly rigorous (a score of 4 or 5 on AP Calculus BC, AP Chemistry or AP Economics). In the case of tutoring students, a good score on the SAT provides a benchmark of academic credibility; a portfolio of good scores in the AP in the relevant subjects creates the subject-specific profile that competitive universities are seeking. We build up both in a way that neither is considered as secondary to the other.
My child finds the SAT Mathematics section significantly more challenging than expected despite strong general mathematical ability. What is causing this?
Dr. Anil Khare: SAT Mathematics section tests mathematical reasoning in a particular format that is literally different than how most students have previously studied mathematics and strong general mathematical ability does not necessarily translate into high SAT Mathematics performance unless deliberately conditioned to do so. The SAT does not teach mathematical concepts directly, but presents them in a real-world context by word problems, data interpretation scenarios and multi-step reasoning challenges that require students to extract the mathematical question within a real-world context, and then solve it. Fluent students in procedural mathematics but with less experience in this interpretive requirement will always find the SAT Mathematics section more challenging than it should be based on their ability level. We do this by giving them specific SAT Mathematics training which develops both the conceptual fluency that the section demands and the particular problem-reading habits that enable students to recognize the mathematical structure within each question and can do so effectively under timed conditions.
How many AP subjects should my child take, and how do you help families make this decision strategically?
Dr. Anil Khare: How many AP courses a tutoring student is supposed to take is a question to which there is no universal answer but there is one very specific answer to each particular student once one knows their university targets, their academic strengths and available time to prepare are properly evaluated. Not taking enough AP courses is an indicator of a lack of academic ambition to stand out in US admissions. Making too many without the preparation depth to score 4s and 5s across all of them produces a profile that appears broad but performs poorly which is counterproductive. The most competitive applicants have known the sweet spot of four to six AP subjects which they take at a pace that ensures they can really master the subject as opposed to simply covering it. We offer advice about AP subject selection with the particular university course requirements and admissions expectations of a particular target institution always in mind so that every AP selection is strategically purposeful and not impressively numerous.
