An additional language must be studied in the Middle Years Program (MYP) in order to gain an understanding of the features, processes, and techniques of language as well as of culture, and to acknowledge that different cultures have different ways of living and thinking. The MYP requires language learning every year of the program. Students are required to study at least two languages continuously during each year of the MYP.
To successfully complete an international education, students must be able to communicate in more than one language and in different formats. In order to help students have the best educational experience possible, the language acquisition course provides linguistic and intellectual challenges to them. During the Middle Years Program, students are given the opportunity to fully develop both their language abilities and also to progress through different phases.
This subject group includes six phases of learning and teaching. The phases do not correspond to specific age groups or MYP year classes. Assessment is based on Criteria A, B, C, and D.
- Criteria A assesses the ability of the student to recognize basic grammatical conventions by measuring his or her comprehension of spoken and visual text.
- As part of Criteria B, students must demonstrate their ability to understand written and visual text. They must identify aspects of format and style as well as identify the author's purpose.
- In Criteria C, students are tested on their ability to respond to verbal/written/visual texts, and it looks at how they use simple phrases to convey ideas, feelings, and information.
- Criteria D focuses on the use of language, both spoken and written, and assists students in organizing information and applying new language in real-life situations.
