IB English refers to a specific set of courses that are taught over the span of 2 years. Through the examination of different texts, the IB English students learn to discover how language is utilized in distinct settings and for unique purposes. There are 3 different Language A courses available in this curriculum. The popular ones are Language and Literature; and available at Higher and Standard Levels. In every English course, the students focus on exploring the nuances of literature, covering the diverse spectrum of plays, novels, poems, and different literary works. The courses emphasize on the relationship between texts and consider place and time and the association between writers and readers.
Course Structure and Content
The IB English students possess 3 distinct options for the courses. English Language and Literature (HL or SL), English Literature (HL or SL), or Literature and Performance (SL).
Literature and Language Courses
In the IB Language and Literature courses (SL or HL), the learners focus on engaging with diverse texts, both non-literary and literary, across different forms of media. Their exploration is beyond only reading; it includes the analysis of how language works and its influence on culture, identity, and communication. Through the in-depth understanding of how language works across the Areas of Exploration (AoEs), IB HL/SL students focus on making big connections between their knowledge of different cultures and experiences.
Differences between Higher Level (HL) and Standard Level (SL)
While the fundamental model for Language A: Literature and Language continues to be the same for HL and SL, there are prominent differences. Standard Level learners focus on studying 4 literary works and the number of non-literary Bodies of Work. Contrarily, the HL students focus on delving deep, covering 6 literary works and the equivalent number of non-literary texts. In paper 1, both HL and SL students evaluate the unseen non-literary texts; however, the HL students should evaluate 2 distinct texts. Individual Oral (IO) and Paper 2 are considered the same for both courses. Nonetheless, their weight is different in the final grade.
Further, HL students possess extra component, the HL Essay. This coursework tasks includes exploration of the line of enquiry associated with the previously studied literary or non-literary text, leading to the 1200-1500 word essay, which explains sufficient understanding of literary or linguistic study.
